September 2009 I moved into a house in Cambridgeport with 5 other people. The house had a large, unique common space. I started asking musicians to come perform and every month for a year I got a traveling artist to play in my living room with at least 2 local supporting artists. In the process I created online and community networks that consisted of musicians, music lovers, cambridge community members and the city's underground press. I routinely searched for fresh artists on tour, wrote them emails, exchanged details back and forth, created facebook events, invited people, (created then) updated the website, designed & updated email newsletters, asked for donations and upkept the guest room for the traveling artists to sleep in. My room mates gladly offered helping hands whenever needed and they all contributed to creating a community dedicated to underground music. Every month was a resounding success, drawing anywhere from 30-90 people and ~$50-100 of donations that went directly to the traveling artist. People experienced something entirely different each month - oftentimes bands that wouldn't have been able to play anywhere else in Boston - in a comfortable setting with couches and friendly faces. In turn, every artist had a respectful and patient audience. Creative juices flowed in every direction. Since moving out of that house I've held similar events in a tiny bike shop in Union Square, Somerville, called Arc En Ciel.
