As Genuine Interactive grew from 20 people to 80 people, its environmental impact increased and became more detrimental. Everywhere I turned I saw wasted energy, improperly disposed waste and other classic forms of disposable corportate consumption. So I wrote an "environmental manifesto" and gave it to the two owners of the company. They approved nearly all of my ideas - all of which minimized waste, reduced energy use and saved money. Now there are recycling recepticals near each waste basket, 95% of employees eat everyday's catered lunches on ceramic plates with real silverwear, we drink local milk delivered by a local farm in glass bottles, more people know about the public transportation commuting policies, the air conditioner and heater are used more sparingly, the lights are always turned off at the end of the day & many more people turn their computers off at night. Individually they are all simple and relatively small ideas, but implementing all them together has changed things drastically for the better. After the manifesto, total energy consumption went down by 12% even though we hired more people and expanded to another floor. I may have led the charge, but it took everybody's help and participation for the initiative to succeed - and that it has.
