Mew
And the Glass
Handed Kites

Columbia
2006

Grade: A
Identification: Danish dreamy/spacey/mellowy-but-hard (prog-pop?) indie rockers' third release (was released overseas last year, finally released by Columbia Records this year). Think high Pinback/Death Cab vocals with M83's powerful droneyness and Muse's heavy guitars rolled into one beautiful mess. Has toured with the likes of Bloc Party and REM.

Robot Loves: The great, powerful choruses such as those in "Why are You Looking Grave? (a song which also features J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr!)" and "The Zookeeper's Boy" that will have you singing along every time you hear them; Mew's ability to stray from simple pop songs and experiment well with some highly layered songs that end up drifting away and molding into the next tracks, such as "Savouirs of Jazz Ballad" and "Circuitry of the Wolf;" the wide array of emotions this album covers, ranging everywhere from fury to passion to mindlessness

Robot Hates: That Jonas Bjerre's addictive and beautiful voice is inevitably still sortof whiny, er, sometimes; the fact that Mew has been ignored by indie kids AND the general population even though they've been released off of major labels for years

Reminds Robot of: Pinback, M83, Muse, Death Cab for Cutie, Mars Volta, Radiohead, Mercury Rev, My Bloody Valentine

Final Diagnostic: Mew's best release to date, even topping their last release Frengers which won lots of awards!

Sample: song clips, 3 mp3s
